presents The McCallum Medal 2010 Presentation Competition
Open to: All Law and PLT students throughout Australia and all young lawyers throughout Australia, who were admitted to legal practice on or after 21 October 2008.
Task: Prepare a presentation synopsis on one of the set employment law and industrial relations topics (see Competition Rules for topics). Five finalists will present at a function on 21 October 2010 hosted by Clayton Utz Lawyers and chaired by Professor Ron McCallum AO, former dean of the Faculty of
Law, University of Sydney.
Judges: The five finalist presentations will be judged by a panel of judges, including:
• The Hon. Justice Rothman AM, Supreme Court of New South Wales; and
• Mr Joe Catanzariti, Partner, Clayton Utz
Due date: Synopsis (max. 1000 words) to be submitted by 5:00 pm on 4 October 2010.
Prizes: The winner will receive the McCallum Medal, have his or her name engraved on the McCallum Medal perpetual shield and receive a cash prize from the sponsor, the details of which will be confirmed shortly. The runner-up will also receive a cash prize.

Everyone knows about the Rhodes Scholarship, but many do not know that Rhodes Scholarships do not represent even a small proportion of the total number of scholarships available to Australian law students for international study.
The ALSA Scholarships Guide collates information about scholarships available for Australian law students and graduates to study internationally. It also records the experiences of some who have gone before.

This competition is hosted by the Isaacs Law Society of the University of Canberra and takes place from Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October. Each University can send two teams of up to three competitors each (two speakers and one researcher), which means six students have the opportunity to participate!
Application deadline: Wednesday 1 September. EXTENDED to Tuesday 7th September!
Questions are based on one or more of the following areas of law only:
• Australian Commonwealth Constitutional Law
• Australian State Constitutional Law
Federal Constitutional Law (LAWS2150) is not a prerequisite. Competitors will moot one problem scenario in the preliminary rounds and another problem scenario in the final rounds. The Grand Final is judged by Chief Justice Robert French of the High Court of Australia.
This competition provides excellent training for the Sir Harry Gibbs National Moot Competition in constitutional law, offered as an elective by the Law Faculty (LAWS2148).
In order to be selected, competitors are expected to:
• have read and understood the Competitions (External) Selection Policy, as published on the Law Society website,
• have read the rules of the competition,
• apply by the deadline with all relevant details,
• set aside time before the competition to train and prepare,
• put in their best efforts to compete to their highest potential as representatives of UNSW, and
• write up a written report after the conference, with all the details listed in clause 7.2 of the Selection Policy.

The UNSW Law Society is proud to present the Paper Presentation for 2010. This is your chance to showcase your skills in your own favourite area of law.
What it involves:
A paper written by you which has achieved a Credit or higher. (Although further changes are allowed)
On competition night, you will give a 10 minute presentation of your paper to a panel of legally minded persons
Students of all years are eligible to apply, the call for papers have been open and will close in 3 weeks. Papers are to be submitted to as well as any questions you may have.
Hurry up and get your papers in, it is your last opportunity to beef up your law skills and credentials for the coming year. A shiny TROPHY await the winner and a slightly smaller one for the runner-up.

The NSW Young Lawyers Family Law Committee invites you to enter the inaugural Family Law Essay Competition.
A total of $250 will be awarded to the two best essays, as judged by a panel of leading family law practitioners.
To enter the Competition, submit an essay of no more than 1,500 words on the following question:
Do Courts need to interfere in parental responsibility relating to medical procedures when parents agree about decisions for their children? Discuss with reference to such decisions as Re Bernadette [2010] FamCA 94 and SMB & JWB Secretary Department of Health and Community Services (1992) 175 CLR.
Entries must be submitted by COB 15 September 2010.
The winners will be announced in the October edition of ‘Debrief’.
Conditions of entry: Entrants must be enrolled (either full-time or part-time) in a Bachelor of Laws course at any university in New South Wales.
