LexisNexis Constitutional Law Moot - Deadline EXTENDED

Apply now for the Lexis Nexis Constitutional Moot!

This competition is hosted by the Isaacs Law Society of the University of Canberra and takes place from Thursday 30th September to Sunday 3rd October. Each University can send two teams of up to three competitors each (two speakers and one researcher), which means six students have the opportunity to participate!

Application deadline: Wednesday 1 September. EXTENDED to Tuesday 7th September!

Questions are based on one or more of the following areas of law only:
• Australian Commonwealth Constitutional Law
• Australian State Constitutional Law

Federal Constitutional Law (LAWS2150) is not a prerequisite. Competitors will moot one problem scenario in the preliminary rounds and another problem scenario in the final rounds. The Grand Final is judged by Chief Justice Robert French of the High Court of Australia.
This competition provides excellent training for the Sir Harry Gibbs National Moot Competition in constitutional law, offered as an elective by the Law Faculty (LAWS2148).
In order to be selected, competitors are expected to:
• have read and understood the Competitions (External) Selection Policy, as published on the Law Society website,
• have read the rules of the competition,
• apply by the deadline with all relevant details,
• set aside time before the competition to train and prepare,
• put in their best efforts to compete to their highest potential as representatives of UNSW, and
• write up a written report after the conference, with all the details listed in clause 7.2 of the Selection Policy.

Exciting New Competition!! - Paper Presentation

The UNSW Law Society is proud to present the Paper Presentation for 2010. This is your chance to showcase your skills in your own favourite area of law.

What it involves:
A paper written by you which has achieved a Credit or higher. (Although further changes are allowed)
On competition night, you will give a 10 minute presentation of your paper to a panel of legally minded persons


Students of all years are eligible to apply, the call for papers have been open and will close in 3 weeks. Papers are to be submitted to as well as any questions you may have.

Hurry up and get your papers in, it is your last opportunity to beef up your law skills and credentials for the coming year. A shiny TROPHY await the winner and a slightly smaller one for the runner-up.

NSWYL Family Law Essay Competition

The NSW Young Lawyers Family Law Committee invites you to enter the inaugural Family Law Essay Competition.
A total of $250 will be awarded to the two best essays, as judged by a panel of leading family law practitioners.
To enter the Competition, submit an essay of no more than 1,500 words on the following question:
Do Courts need to interfere in parental responsibility relating to medical procedures when parents agree about decisions for their children? Discuss with reference to such decisions as Re Bernadette [2010] FamCA 94 and SMB & JWB Secretary Department of Health and Community Services (1992) 175 CLR.
Entries must be submitted by COB 15 September 2010.
The winners will be announced in the October edition of ‘Debrief’.
Conditions of entry: Entrants must be enrolled (either full-time or part-time) in a Bachelor of Laws course at any university in New South Wales.

ANJeL/Blake Dawson Essay Prize in Japanese Law

Blake Dawson, one of Australia’s leading law firms, has sponsored an Essay Prize for the Australian Network for Japanese Law. The prize of $1000 is for the best research essay on Japanese law, primarily by a student (or group of students) enrolled in an Australian university (see detailed "Conditions of Entry", below). Winning essays in this competition are often later published.

The conditions of entry are:
•    (Eligibility) The essay competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students, whether in law or non-law disciplines, who are currently enrolled in an Australian university. Students based at overseas institutions are also eligible if they are graduands or graduates of an Australian university and pursuing their overseas studies full-time. University lecturers pursuing part-time degrees overseas and lawyers engaged in part-time study overseas are not eligible. Past winners of the Prize are ineligible.
•    (Subject-matter) The essay may be on any topic relating to Japanese law or justice. The essay may focus exclusively on the Japanese legal system or feature Japan as a case study in a comparative analysis of the topic.
•    (Length) The essay may be written in either English or Japanese. The essay must be up to 10,000 words (if in English) or 25,000 characters (if in Japanese). This word length includes all references. The recommended minimum word length is 5,000 words (if in English) or 12,500 characters (if in Japanese), although ANJeL will accept shorter contributions.
•    (Judging) Essays will be judged by ANJeL’s three Co-Directors, consulting with representatives of Blake Waldron Dawson as required.

The 2010 CEFA Governor-General’s Undergraduate Essay Competition

The Governor-General’s Undergraduate Essay Competition is Australia’s most prestigious civics essay competition. It is open to Australian undergraduate students (including LLB, JD and Honours students) studying in all faculties at universities across Australia and includes questions that are related to law, politics and other contemporary issues facing Australia.

The 2010 Competition is offering up to $33,000 in cash prizes to the winning authors of 2,500 word essays. Every year the Competition is judged by a panel of distinguished individuals including a High Court Justice and prominent academics. The final judging panel this year is being chaired by The Hon. Robert French AC, Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. This prestigious competition provides students with the opportunity to be further recognised for their academic skill, talent and research.
